Jakarta, the world's under-five mortality rate has decreased significantly in the last 10 years, including in some poor countries. However, the target of Millennium Development Goals to be achieved by 2015 is predicted to far.

WHO is taking care of bodies of children, Unicef revealed in 2010 listed the number of deaths among children under 5 years old (toddlers) as much as 7.6 million. This figure is much lower than the 1990 rate, which still reaches 12 million deaths.

If calculated per day, mortality decreased by about 12,000 cases / day compared to 10 years ago. Meanwhile, if compared with the birth rate, infant mortality decreased from 88 cases to 57 cases per 100,000 live births.

The decline in child mortality is not only experienced by countries that are more prosperous, but also in some poor countries. Even rank 5 countries with the greatest decline was dominated by poor countries, namely Sierra Leone, Republic of Niger, Malawi, Libya and Timor Leste.

Some countries are still recorded a fairly high mortality rate, even nearly 50 percent of child mortality around the world are concentrated in 5 countries. The five countries are India, Nigeria, Congo, Pakistan and China.

"But we must not forget the fact that currently there are 21,000 children who die every day due to the things that could have been prevented," said Anthony Lake, the executive director of Unicef, as quoted by MSNBC, Thursday (09/15/2011).

Of all under-five mortality, under 1 year of age accounted for the greatest number that is 70 percent. Newborn death are also quite high, because 40 percent of under-five deaths worldwide occurred in the first months of a baby's life.

This decrease is indeed to be thankful for, but Unicef urged world leaders not to be complacent. However the numbers recorded in 2010 is still far from the target of Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) that must be achieved in 2015 which lowered child mortality up to 2 / 3 of the 1990.
